The water on the island is desalinated from sea-water, so whilst it is safe to drink, it is salty.

Bottled water is easily obtainable from supermarkets, and is reasonably priced.

Do not leave valuables or surfing equipment in your car or on the beach.

Remember that the sun here is very powerful, particularly in the summer months- make sure that you use a high factor sun block to prevent burning.  And do not forget a hat!

Remember that many shops close for a siesta in the afternoon

Take your passport or identity card with you at all times (legal requirement).

You will also need it if you are changing money or paying with a credit or debit card, particularly in a supermarket.

If you are driving a hire car, keep your driving licence and hire documents with you at all times (legal requirement).

Be careful as you approach roundabouts: they have reducing speed limits as you approach them, and you must be under the new limit as you pass the sign.  There is a system of on-the-spot fines.

Do not try to drive or park on the sand - treat it as you would treat snow.

Make sure that you have plenty of fuel in your car, service stations are spread thinly and in any case most are closed on Sunday afternoon and holidays.

Note that smoking in enclosed public spaces, such as bars and restaurants, is now prohibited by law.
